‘Expect to laugh for an hour-and-a-half’

Comic actor Steve Solomon’s Bermuda Festival show, ‘My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m In Therapy’, promises to be a treat — and it will include “Bermudian surprises”.

Solomon, who arrived in Bermuda on Wednesday, said people should “expect to laugh for an hour-and-a-half”.

“[There will be] a lot of surprises — sound effects, musical surprises, great characters. My characters are wild, and I’ve been flavouring it to the local community…there will be some Bermudian surprises.”

The show, a one-man comedy act, features Solomon’s family — everyone from Mom and Dad to Bubbie, Uncle Vinnie and Macho Carmine. Solomon said: “One of the reasons why I love doing this is because it’s a one-man show, I do 32 different characters onstage, and every show something unique happens. Somebody’ll sneeze, somebody’s cellphone goes off. I don’t have to interact with other actors, so I can stop what I’m doing and go into a little stand up comedy, and then go back to the script. The audience loves that because they feel what just happened is unique to them.”

Solomon, who has already been to Bermuda several times during performances on cruise ships, says he loves the island because of its peace, serenity and cleanliness. He arrived here from south Florida, where he was doing a week of stand up comedy performances.

Prior to his career in acting and comedy, Solomon worked as the assistant to the superintendent of schools on Long Island, New York, for 18 years, and obtained his doctorate in secondary education. “My brain was turning to jello,” he says. “I couldn’t stand the politics or any of it.”

He has now been doing stand up comedy for 15 years, a gift he says he gets from his family. “My dad had a great sense of humour, he was a wild man. My mother is a perpetual grouch — we were trying to figure out a psychological disorder that means grouch, grouch-a-holic, grump-a-holic.,” he laughs.

‘My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy’ will take place tonight, January 13, as well as January 14 and 15. Performances take place at 8pm at City Hall Theatre each night. For more information on the Bermuda Festival visit www.bermudafestival.org.[[In-content Ad]]
