'Dr. Brown's motive? It IS about independence'
Voters should beware of the statements made by the Premier, Dr. Ewart Brown, which were carried in the Bermuda Sun on Wednesday, June 13.
He said the next election would not be fought with independence as an issue. He was quoted as having said: "Nothing about the next election will significantly alter the independence issue."
These are the statements of an individual who is trying to make Bermudians believe the cow they can see in the field is actually just a stray dog, and who believes Bermudian voters are stupid enough to believe him.
Forget his words, listen to his music.
In recent days, we've seen him threaten to cut off communication with the Governor. We've seen his minister David Burch demand the Governor give him operational power over the police. We've seen Dr. Brown duck out of the Queen's Birthday celebrations (to my knowledge, this was the first time a Premier has failed to attend the parade since 1968) on the claim of urgent personal business in the U.S.
We've heard Dr. Brown say, sarcastically, that 'adults' in Bermuda want to handle their own affairs, that Bermuda has a 'dysfunctional' relationship with the U.K.
And he's just getting warmed up. He's got more tricks up his sleeve than a riverboat gambler.
The next election is all about independence. Dr Brown will say before the election that it isn't, but after the election, if he wins, he'll claim the electorate gave his views on independence a vote of confidence, and he'll try to take us there by the back door, the front door or any little window he can force open.
The question I ask is: 'Can we trust Dr.. Brown that the next election will not really be about Independence?'
Remember, Dr. Brown after the 2003 election said, and I quote: "We had to mislead you."
Do not be misled again.
Voters should behave in this election as if it is just as Dr Brown means it to be, a referendum about independence.
If you want to cut ties with Britain, vote for the PLP. If you want your opinion on the issue to matter, vote for my colleagues. Simple as that.
