Ask the coach
Doubles play requires good communication
A: Usually if you’re having problems at doubles it comes down to communication.
You have got to remember that it's a team game.
You could be the best two players in the world but if you're playing as individuals then you’ll never win anything.
Talk to each other, work out each other’s strengths and weaknesses and decide before the match, who is going to go to the net more often, who is going to go for the lobs?
Flexibility is important. You have to be able to change your game-plan as you go along, and that means talking to your partner all the way through.
If you look at the Bryant brothers, one of the best doubles combinations in the world at the moment, they talk to each other after every point.
Always encourage your opponent.
Don't let them see you are disappointed if they make a mistake.
Everyone messes up sometimes and it helps if they know you're in their corner.
Where can I play
in the winter?
Q: With the rain starting to come down is there anywhere I can play in Bermuda during wet weather? If not, how do I stay on top of my game?
A: Unfortunately there are no indoor courts in Bermuda so you can be kept off the court for a few weeks at a time.
There are simple things that you can do to stay in shape.
Jogging and ab crunches are always good tennis exercises.
If you don’t mind the rain you can get out in the backyard or on the beach and practive volleys with a partner.
You can always practive your service toss inside as well.
It might not be as exciting as a proper game, but the good news is you'll be that much sharper than your opponent when the sun comes out and you get back on the court.
