Two suspected cases of equine strangles - similar to flu in humans - prompted the Bermuda Equestrian Federation to close the Devonshire centre and cancel all shows for the next fortnight.
This weekend's Inwood Show and Friday night's pony racing meet are the first casualties.
Mike Cherry, president of the Bermuda Equestrian Federation, said the association had taken the action on the advice of the Government vet as a precautionary measure.
He said the vet was awaiting confirmation of equine strangles before any further action was taken.
He said the disease was contagious and the BEF had been advised not to host any meets.
"It is not a big problem as long as it is contained early and that is what has happened in this case."
He said it was disappointing to have to cancel the events, but added: "The welfare of the horses is the most important thing."
He said members would be updated on the situation as it developed.[[In-content Ad]]
