DeCosta and Samuels take top honours at Ag Show

Jahdayna Samuels and her pony Dream Catcher were undefeated by winning all three of the pony jumping classes at the Exhibition.

Dream Catcher, a jumping machine who is also pretty quick across the ground was undefeated in pony jumping. Samuels also won the Junior Equitation 12-14 years which lead to her winning the Fred Pimentel Award for the Junior with the most points at the Annual Exhibition. Samuels' coach, Nick DeCosta was the overall Adult Champion and won the George K. Kenien trophy.

Thursday's event consisted of mostly riding horse classes and a couple western parade and pleasure riding classes.

Michael DeCosta's Soft Spoken took first in the Riding Horse in Hand, coveted Clay Merrell Trophy for Riding Horse Over 15.2hh and Best Riding Horse in Show with Melinda DeCosta.

Boom Boom Pow and Sonia Ringer won The Donald Lindo Cup for Riding Horse Under 15.2hh, while the western parade and pleasure classes were won by Peter Rego riding Cherokee Yankee Dancer and Jonelle White riding Sir Gallahad respectively. The horse jumping classes saw Tyler Lopes on his new mount, Bailey's Bay win the 0.95m class, Michael Rodrigues and Scooby Doo win the 1.10m class, and Claire Howard and Just a Rose win the Esso 1.15m jumping class.

On Friday the event consisted of pony classes and there was an influx entries for the driving classes. It was Random Raider and Random Rockstar from Random Stables that took the silverware in most of the driving classes and the coveted Best Driving Horse in Show, while The Guardian and Casey Truran took home the silverware in the Riding Pony in Hand, Riding Pony, and Best Riding Pony in Show. Francis Weddup and her mount, Mr. Sandman were first in the Hit and Hurry 1.00m jumping class held later in the day. The day also saw the miniature ponies showcased with Samantha Hayward and Winter winning the Miniature Horse in Hand and junior driver KiJuan Waldron and Squeeze Toy win The Annual Exhibition Cup for Miniature Horse to Drive class.

The final day of the Agricultural Exhibition saw the equestrians showcase their style and grace and the pony racing ponies strut their stuff! Marlena Tucker lead the way by winning the Junior Equitation 15-18 years, Jahdayna Samuels winning Junior Equitation 12-14 years, Madison Golinski winning the Junior Equitation under 12 years, Hannah Simmons winning Junior Equitation under 10 years, and Amber Bridges winning the Lead Line class. The Racing Pony, Pacers was won by Shamrock High Alert and Mark Richardson and the Trotters was won by Pretty Boy Hanover and Nick DeCosta who also took the Racing Pony Championship class over Richardson. The Best Driving Pony in Show was won by Golden Nugget of Inwood Stables. The afternoon saw the first time horse/pony jumping with a racing pony competing as a team for the Team Jump and Race Class. Taking the Outright Award was Jaeda Smith riding Stetson and her partner, Philip Correia driving Approved Credit. The final two classes of the day were the Bermuda Pony Jumping Championship won by Jahdayna Samuels and her pony Dream Catcher and the Horse Jumping in two phases class, won by Francis Weddup and her horse, Mr. Sandman. Samuels will represent Bermuda in the Caribbean Equestrian Association Junior Jumping Competition, Bermuda Leg on May 8th and 9th along with Tyler Lopes.

President of the Bermuda Equestrian Federation, Mr. Michael Cherry "expressed satisfaction with the three day show results and echoed the two judges' comments that the turn out of riders, drivers, horses and ponies was excellent and kept the crowd entertained proving once again that equestrians form an important part of the Annual Exhibition".
