Dead whale dragged seven miles off shore
WEDNESDAY, MAY 2: The carcass of a dead whale had to be dragged more than seven miles off shore yesterday so it did not land in the East End.
Decomposing
The decomposing animal was spotted floating just off St David’s Head by a fisherman at 6:30am.
The fishermen called Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre at around 6:36am to report the sighting.
The pilot boat was then dispatched to investigate the report and found the 25ft carcass, which is believed to be a humpback whale, 0.7 miles off St David’s Head.
Fisheries officers were called to the scene and pulled the dead whale off shore to prevent it drifting onto the island.
Carcass
They left the carcass seven and a half miles south southwest of the island at 12:45pm.
The Sun tried to contact the Fisheries Department to find out more about the operation but nobody returned our calls.
