Cricketers to take part in World U-15 tournament

Some of Bermuda's most talented young cricketers will compete for an Americas XI in a mini-World Cup to be held in the West Indies next month.

The CLICO Under-15 tournament will also include the West Indies, Ireland, Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan, Holland and Zimbabwe.

Bermuda were invited to send a team but because of exam commitments the board opted to be part of an Americas select instead.

Lionel Tannock, the manager of the senior national team, has been selected as the Americas manager with Cayman coach Theo Cuffy chosen as head coach.

The group stages will take place in Trinidad and Guyana, from April 19.

Bermuda coach Gus Logie said the under-15 selectors would choose five or six youngsters to be part of the squad, which will also include players from Canada, The Bahamas and Cayman.

"The squad is in training at the moment and the selectors will be getting together over the next few weeks."

He said school grades would be taken into account as well as performances on the field.

Logie also paid tribute to Lionel Tannock and congratulated him on his selection as manager of the team.

"I would like to congratulate him personally. No job is too big or too small for him."

Grant Smith, the U-15 national coach, said the quality was high at U-15 level, where Bermuda traditionally dominates the Americas.

The likes of Greg Maybury, Tre Govia and Deunte Darrell, who travelled with the Under-19s to the World Cup, Shea Pitcher, Josh Gilbert, Sinclair Smith and Kevon Fubler are all in contention for a place in the Americas side.

"It should be a very competitive tournament. The last time they held an Under-15 World Cup was quite a few years ago.

"A few of the big names, like Australia and South Africa, are not participating. I don't really know what to expect to tell you the truth."

The Bermuda squad is currently training to compete in the Americas tournament, which could be hosted in Bermuda this summer.

Girls cricket

The BCB are holding trials for Bermuda's first girl's U16 and U12 National Squads on Sunday. The teams will train regularly under the guidance of qualified coaches and compete in the BCB Youth Leagues.

The programme for the day has been designed by National Coach, Gus Logie and Cricket Development Director, Arnold Manders.

Trials will take place at Berkeley Institute Field. U12s (12 years and younger) will try out from 10am - 12pm and the U16s (16 years and younger) from 1pm - 3pm (age as of Sept. 1).[[In-content Ad]]
