Cricket looking to recruit next generation of players

As Bermuda's senior squad embarks on its World Cup qualifying mission, the hunt has already begun for the next generation of international players.

Bermuda's Under-15 squad will assemble on Sunday and the call has gone out to any young player to come and try out for the team.

The first session will be held this weekend at Bermuda High School Gym at 9:30am. Coach Grant Smith said the players who had been a part of his squad last year - and were still eligible for the age group - had been invited to attend along with any other youngsters who felt they could meet the standard.

He said the players would be assessed in terms of their skill level and attitude. The squad is building towards the ICC Americas tournament to be held in New York in August.

Smith said the decision to hold the Americas tournament this year (the tournament is normally held every two years but the date was switched to bring it in line with the rest of the Americas youth tournaments) meant that several players who would have beein ineligible for 2010 were now cleared to play.

"It's worked out well for us. From our point of view it would be great to have the tournament every year because it keeps the players interested and involved in cricket."

Smith said the squad would have to be trimmed in the run up to the tournament. "We'll look to cut the squad down half way between now and the tournament."
