FRIDAY, FEB. 17: A local company has shed its brick and mortar business to go to “the cloud”.

Conspec Limited, which used to be located on Cemetery Road, can now be found online at www.conspecimports.com.

Dennis Cherry, owner of Conspec, said the business is “alive and well” and “we have had a record year in sales but also in aggravation so we have evolved as we must and are in a very strong position.”

Online

Conspec sources out products and ships them in for customers and Mr Cherry said he did not need the building space to do that any more.

“I provide a valuable service to the community.

“There’s the whole deal about shipping things and hurting the retailer — I’m still a retailer.

“Because of the online resources available, the brick and mortar retailers need to rethink their strategy like I’ve done.”

Mr Cherry said as a Bermudian, the money he makes stays in Bermuda.

“I support Bermuda and We still need brick and mortar retailers, but people come to me and ask me for help.”

He said customers will come to him with a price from a local retailer but when the customer looked online, the retailer was selling the product at three times the price.

Mr Cherry said residents are aware of the overheads but they can’t justify spending their hard-earned money, especially in this tight economy, on a product that is three times the price.

Mr Cherry sources the product, buys it and ships it to Bermuda, then sells it to the customer.

Excellent

“I shop online and source them the best deal.

“I ship it here through Sea Venture Overseas Shipping — an excellent company — and then have it delivered to their house.”

He added he does have some inventory, but that “gets expensive” carrying it when it is not paid for.

“I’m trying to take it straight from the shippers to customers’ homes.”

Conspec will also be at the Coldwell Banker Bermuda Realty Home Show this Friday and Saturday.

The company's booths will be seven and eight.
