National coach Gus Logie said he was enthused by the level of commitment and 'thirst for knowledge' on display at Saturday's national cricket open day.

Around 100 cricketers, the majority of them youngsters, were put through a series of drills, tactical sessions and net practices at the national stadium.

Club coaches and senior national team players were also in attendance as Logie attempted to take an inventory of the human resources at his disposal as Bermuda builds towards ICC Trophy 2009.

"I was enthused by what I saw," said the coach, who has challenged the players to take the information they learned on Saturday back to their clubs and step up the level of their training sessions.

"I'll be going round the clubs. I'd like to see the different training set ups and give a few ideas on how they can improve.

"Just turning up and having a hit and a bowl - you can't do that anymore.

"You sit down, you discuss things, you do drills, you improve yourselves. If we see everybody doing it, then the standard will raise naturally.

"I said to all the participants out there on Saturday. I laud their commitment, I love their enthusiasm, the thirst for knowledge was quite incredible.

"At the end of the day its up to the individuals to want to play. We can only give them so much and take them so far, then the commitment must come."

Logie said there was no official training programme in place at the moment, but the guys had been urged to continue with their fitness programmes.

He said the facilities at the National Centre were still not operational and even when a training squad is announced in the next few weeks, the players would be working primarily on fitness and conditioning and would be given time to rain with their clubs.

A contract situation to allow players to balance work and cricket commitments has yet to be put in place but it is unlikely that any players will be recruited full-time.

The likeliest formula appears to be that which was deployed initially in the build up to the World Cup with several players on contracts, still working in their regular jobs but able to get time off work, with compensation, for tours and training camps. Bermuda's next scheduled assignment is against Ireland in August.[[In-content Ad]]
