'Come join the dream' says grateful student enjoying a free breakfast
FRIDAY, NOV. 25: ‘You can smell the bacon from the bus stop,’ hollered one little boy as he joined the queue for pancakes.
The youngster pushed in amongst his friends on packed bench, orange juice and plate in hand, and began to devour his breakfast.
He was one of nearly 50 pupils at Victor Scott who made it to school early yesterday morning to take advantage of the Breakfast For Every Child programme.
The chefs serving the food, who also happened to be the bosses of the Lancashire Insurance, had been up for hours preparing the scrambled eggs, muffins and sausages when the first arrival poked her head around the door at 7:45am and sheepishly began to make her breakfast order.
She was soon followed by a stream of children, many dressed in Victor Scott tracksuit tops, keen to pile up their plates.
“Come join the dream,’ said one hungry child to the new arrivals.
“We’re the VIP table — we have bacon and sausage,’ echoed another.
By 8am dozens of chattering children sat around two long tables happily munching their breakfast.
Some had even sneaked back for an extra muffin or an apple juice top-up.
And they kept coming, ensuring that the Lancashire staff were kept on their toes.
By 8:30am most of the youngsters had begun to trickle towards class, and the dirty dishes were being put away.
But not before the students had thanked the breakfast providers.
One little boy even made the effort to shake the hand of every adult in the dining room to express his appreciation.
And that was that. As quickly as it had started, breakfast was over at Victor Scott Primary School.
At least until this morning when the Lancashire staff are back again.
