Coach’s Corner / Gripping the racquet

By David Lambert- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

As I explained last week, we’re going to start working on adding a few things to the basic game you’ve developed over the past few months.

We’ve already shown you how to do the basic forehand. Now we are going to look at how you can use spin to increase your power.

If you’ve been watching the Australian Open you might have noticed that most of the top players are using top-spin forehands from an open stance.

To pull this off you need to alter your grip slightly from the basic beginners grip, known as the Eastern grip —?where you are shaking hands with the racquet.

Instead you will be using what we call a semi-western grip, which will give you a slanted racquet face. The basics of the shot are still the same.

Strike the ball in front of your left knee (for a right hander), keep balanced and watch the ball on to your strings.

As you make contact you should brush over the ball to maximize the spin.[[In-content Ad]]
