Usually when you hear someone wants to get your children hooked on speed you're looking for the nearest police officer.

But when its the Bermuda Karting Association saying it, you know it has nothing to do with drugs and everything to do with having a good time in a safe environment.

The club has an incentive to get young people out to try the sport.

Normally that would be an expensive proposition, but with the club bringing in youth karts for new young drivers to test out, that means any child could afford to sit behind the wheel.

The group is holding a general meeting tomorrow night at 7pm at Spanish Point Boat Club and is hoping some new people who would like to try out the sport will show up.

It is also hoping that some of the people that used to enjoy the sport in the late 1990s and early 2000s will turn out to hear about what karting is doing now.

Scott Barnes said the club has tried making it cheaper for racers.

"It is an expensive sport so we've purchased tyres in bulk. That way people can buy them from the club at a cheaper price. It's just a way to help people out price wise."

Barnes, who has plenty of experience racing in the U.S, said even for new people who want to learn the sport, there are inexpensive ways to get in.

"The TAG Class is a good way to start in.

"We've started a junior programme this year. We bought 10 karts out of the club's money for juniors. Any junior who wants to come down, drive a kart and test it out, can.

"We have two or three kids who come down every week. They just love driving."

Barnes said the child needs to be wearing long pants and a jacket.

"We provide the kart and the helmet. It's just a small fee and they can race every Sunday. Hopefully they can get hooked and then buy their own kart. It's a great deal. The fee just takes care of the fuel we have to buy for the karts."

He said the junior karts are only doing 20 to 25 miles per hour and its very safe.

Barnes said adults who wanted to get into the sport are also invited to try it. He picked up a sponsor, Sean Johnson, and others could do so as well to help defray costs.
