Celebration of "Champ" Hunt Friday at Library
THURSDAY, AUGUST 26: The Bermuda National Library invites the public to attend a special presentation in its newly opened Bermuda History and Cultural Studies Room to celebrate a true sporting icon – Alma Victor “Champ” Hunt.
On Friday, August 27 at 11am, well-known author and historian Ira Philip M.B.E., J.P. will present a deposit copy of the book Champ! The One and Only Alma Hunt to the Bermuda National Library.
Alma Victor “Champ” Hunt (1910-1990) is considered by many to be one of the finest cricket players Bermuda has ever produced. He was a former Somerset Cricket Club and Cup Match player, best known for his heroics on the field of play, as a top batsman, medium pace bowler and slip fielder.
Champ was one of five brothers who represented Somerset in the annual Cup Match game. He was a professional cricketer for many years with Aberdeenshire in Scotland, and obtained the opportunity to represent Scotland in 1938 when his team played against Australia and Yorkshire.
In 1948, after his successful career in cricket, Mr. Hunt travelled to New York and commenced studies at Columbia University. Upon completion he returned home to become a physical education teacher. Alma “Champ” Hunt later was recognized as a well-respected cricket administrator and journalist. He was posthumously inducted into the Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Following the presentation to celebrate this true sporting icon, both Mr. Ira Philip and Ms. Ellen Kelly, who is the author of the children’s book Champ to the Rescue, will be available to sign copies of their books which can be purchased after the presentation.
This is a free event for all to learn about one of Bermuda’s best. The general public is strongly encouraged to come out and support this special presentation at The Bermuda National Library, Par-la-Ville Park, 13 Queen Street, Hamilton.
