CedarBridge downs Warwick for boys’ title
Erica Woods wins MVP award and leads Warwick to girls’ crown
The Bermuda Basketball Association's spring tournament ended with CedarBridge Academy crowned as top dogs.
But Steven Simons, of the BBA, said there was plenty of talent on display from all the teams involved.
“It was a very competitive tournament with some close results between the schools. There was some really good basketball.”
His three players of the tournament were CedarBridge's Kevin Stephens, Akiel Smith, of Warwick Academy and Jordan Commissiong of Mount St Agnes Academy.
“They are a bit young at the moment but all those three players have got the talent and are not far away from being at national team level.”
He said the association was looking to set up a youth national team to play in one of the senior leagues to get experience.
“There are a lot of prospects in the high school programme right now. We want to groom some of these players to be part of the national team in future.
“We want to give them a bit more competition and get them working on the same plays so they are not starting from scratch when they come into the national team.”
He said the overall standard of basketball in schools and across the island was improving.
“When I was in high school, which wasn't that long ago, it was not as big a sport as it is now. The teams are getting better and better.”[[In-content Ad]]
