Bermuda batsman Lionel Cann has put his retirement plans on hold and admitted he would still like to captain the national team before he calls it a day.

Cann, who this week has been appointed as coach of St. David's with Del Hollis as his assistant, thought about giving up international cricket after the World Cup to spend more time with his family.

But he feels he still has a point to prove at the highest level and needs to stay on, at least until 2009, in the best interests of Bermuda.

"I'm at my peak physical fitness. Anyone who knows me says I am young at heart. If you look around the world, players are peaking in their thirties. I'm just starting to reach my peak.

"I'm going to get old one day and I don't want to look back and say 'I should have done this or I should have done that.'"

Cann, 34, added that Bermuda having one-day status until 2009 and the prospect of testing himself against top class opposition was impossible to resist.

"I feel I can play at that level. Over the last three years since I came back to international cricket I have progressed from level to level. I proved myself at the World Cricket League and I got a peek at the World Cup.

"I still believe that with a few more games I can step up to that level (World Cup) too."

Cann also admitted that he would be interested in the captaincy job if it were to become available.

The selectors are meeting this week to pick a 30-man training squad and will make a decision on the captaincy at the same time.

Irving Romaine is expected to remain in the job, but Cann said if the selectors chose to go down a different route, now or in the future, he would jump at the chance to lead the team.

"I've been captain at Cup Match, I'm back at St David's as skipper, I feel I have leadership qualities, so yeah I'd definitely like to be captain.

"Some players don't want the job but it is something I would look forward to."

Cann added that Premier Dr. Ewart Brown's statement that the National Centre would be equipped to host one-day-internationals by the summer had been another factor in his decision to stay on.

"My dream has always been to play in front of my home crowd. Hopefully I'll get the chance to perform in my own country."[[In-content Ad]]
