Lionel Cann let the Bermuda Cricket Board know that he cannot fully devote himself to the national team at this time as he has to set his personal life in order.
Cann told the Bermuda Sun that it does not have anything to do with him being demoted from vice-captain.
Cann sent this letter to the Lionel Thomas, chairman of the selectors for the BCB:
"Due to personal and family commitments I must decline the invitation to train with the senior national team. As a senior member i know the the sacrifice it takes to play at the highest level. At this particular time I am not able to meet those requirements. I will revisit the possibilities in a few months, at which time I hope I can fullfil the requirements as a National squad cricketer.
"I would like to wish you and the team much success in your endeavours and support you and the team fully."
Cann told the Bermuda Sun: "There are some personal business and family business that I have to deal with. There are a lot of things going on at once that need my attention.
"This is temporary. It's not retirement. I'll reassess in a few month's time."
He added that his decision has nothing to do with him being suspended for Bermuda's next two One Day Internationals or the recent appointment of Rodney Trott as the new vice-captain of the senior team.
He said there are so many ODIs coming up, his suspension would have been a short-lived deal.
"That would fly by quick," Cann said. "It has nothing do to with the cricket board. I just have my own personal challenges in life that needs my attention that I can't commit to make training four times a week. There's no way I can make that commitment with what's going on with my life."
Cann said there have been plenty of vice-captains in the Bermuda squad over the last four years and it will be a good training ground for Trott to hone his skills with the senior team after leading the U-19s.
"The vice-captaincy is there for experience.
"The vice-captaincy isn't what I want or is anything I was looking forward to anyway. That's for somebody who's wanting to be captain. I feel I am already groomed as a captain. That isn't an issue.
"It isn't a secret that I feel that I'm ready to be captain and that's one of my goals."
Cann said that he'll still be playing for St. David's as that is less of a commitment. He said that will also help keep him in shape for when he returns to the national team later.
"It won't take much time for me to make that adjustment," Cann said.[[In-content Ad]]
