Cann, who has presided over one win and two draws in his three years as skipper, aims to go out with a victory at Wellington Oval next week.
And he hopes to continue as a player for many years to come.
But he said it was time to mould a younger player as skipper.
"My interest in the game isn't what it used to be.
"It is time to build a new captain who can lead St. George's and even Bermuda in the future.
"I'm in my twilight years. Not being made captain of Bermuda took a lot out of me and now I'm coming to the end of my career I should move over and allow us to find a skipper who can gain experience at Cup Match and go on and lead the country."
Good choices
Cann believes there will be no shortage of candidates citing OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden, who have shared the St. David's captaincy this season, as two potential successors.
And he insists that, like Andrew Flintoff in his final Ashes series, he'll be more hyped than ever to win the Cup this year.
"I'd love for us to play some good cricket and go out with a win. I'm ready to do the job this year and after that it is time for a change."
Cann quit the national team after the World Cup qualifiers in April and has relinquished the captaincy of St. David's this year.
The 36-year-old says he has other priorities beyond the game that he needs to focus on.
But he hopes to continue as a player.
"The captaincy isn't just something you can do for two days. It's a serious commitment."[[In-content Ad]]
