TUESDAY, AUGUST 7: Tyler Butterfield finished 34th in a field of 55 in today’s men’s Olympic triathlon in London.

Butterfield finished the race in 1:50:32, just over four minutes behind winner Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain. Brownlee’s brother Jonathan was third while Javier Gomez of Spain was second.

Butterfield, traditionally a poor swimmer, came out of the swim in 54th and immediately began to pick off the other triathletes. He had a 38 second transition to the bike, the eighth quickest of any of the competitors, and moved up to 50th.

Butterfield had an amzing bike - the fastest of any of the competitors. He moved up to 45th after the first lap and was 37th after the third and 28th after the fifth eventually making his way to 23rd after the transition to the run.

The run wasn’t as kind as he started to drift back in the field, falling to 34th after the first lap and 36th after two.

He put on a surge at the end to reclaim two more spots and finish 34th.
