BMA inviting applicants for 2012 Graduate Training Programme

TUESDAY, MARCH 13: The Bermuda Monetary Authority (‘the BMA’ or ‘the Authority’) is pleased to announce that the application window for the 2012 Graduate Training Programme (GTP) is now open. In addition the Authority will also hold GTP Information Sessions to give prospective applicants, or their parents, the chance to network with BMA team members and GTP trainees, and get first-hand information about the Programme.

Jeremy Cox, the Authority’s CEO, said “The GTP is like a regulatory incubator, where graduate trainees are exposed to the issues, challenges and rewards of a modern regulatory environment. Having had the privilege of being a regulator on behalf of Bermuda for about 20 years now, I can say the Authority is a great place to have a career since upon completing their programme, the graduate trainees will be able to contribute directly towards sustaining Bermuda’s economic stability.”

Mesheiah Crockwell, Head of Human Resources at the Authority said that given the importance of sound regulation towards maintaining local and international financial stability, resourcing the Authority with knowledgeable, highly-skilled regulators is a key goal for the organisation, and nurturing Bermudian talent to achieve this is a bonus.

“Through guidance and mentorship, the Programme is designed to ensure that each trainee becomes a key resource and can fill technical positions within all of the various business units,” Mrs. Crockwell said.

“Whether they are interested in insurance, banking or the law, each trainee’s programme is based on a personalised work track which supports their area of interest. The Programme is demanding, but for those who feel that they are up for the challenge, it can be a very rewarding career.”

The BMA launched its three-year GTP in 2008. The Programme includes rotations across a number of various departments in the Authority, as well as local and international secondments in industry and with other regulators. The first GTP trainees, Vashun Blanchette and Treasa Fubler are currently on international secondments at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors in Basel, Switzerland and Hiscox in London respectively. During his four months at the IAIS, Vashun is working closely with their Financial Stability Committee and is involved in the publication of global industry market reports and macropudential surveillance. At Hiscox, Treasa is working on the Group Compliance, Group Risk and Group Internal Audit Teams, as well as gaining additional exposure with their London Market team.

These international secondments follow local placements at HSBC Bermuda and Conyers Dill & Pearman respectively. Upon successfully completing the GTP, the trainees will be offered full-time employment within the Authority.

Three Information Sessions will be held at BMA House on Victoria Street from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 15th March, 19th April and 10th May 2012. Anyone wishing to attend the Information Sessions should RSVP by calling 278 0241, or by emailing [email protected].

To be eligible for the GTP, potential candidates must be:

• Bermudian

• a university graduate with at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

• intelligent and well-spoken with a strong business sense

• able to produce high quality written and oral presentations

• able to demonstrate basic knowledge of the insurance and/or financial services sectors
