Bermudians made redundant, but guest workers kept on at the Reefs (Update 2)

MONDAY, NOV. 7, 5:15PM UPDATE: Three Bermudian maintenance workers were made redundant at The Reefs today.

Workers in the housekeeping department went on strike in support of the men who were let go.

Chris Furbert, president of the Bermuda Industrial Union said the maintenance department was overstaffed with six non-Bermudians, four Bermudians and a spouse of a Bermudian.

All three men let go were Bermudian.

They were offered four weeks pay upfront but refused it based on advice from Mr Furbert.

He said after meeting with management at the hotel, the workers would remain redundant.

“We find it extremely challenging that Bermudians are going to be put out of work and migrant workers are staying on staff.

“We have some serious challenges with that.

“Unemployment is so high and now you’re talking about putting three more Bermudians out of work.

“We told them it was going to cause some challenges.”

Nagma Walker, general manger of the Southampton hotel said: “As a part of restructuring and realignment of The Reefs Hotel & Club, three positions in the maintenance department were made redundant.

“These decisions are difficult as we value our employees and their contributions. 

"We empathize with them and are working with the Bermuda Industrial Union to assist in finding alternative employment for the three individuals.

“During this difficult economic climate, we are doing everything we can to minimize job redundancies while at the same time, maintain our high service standards for our guests."

Mr Furbert said he would be meeting with the Bermuda Hotel Association and Patrice Minors, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry to find a way forward.
