Sprinters Kristopher Trott and Dijon Peniston will spearhead Bermuda’s 17-strong Delaware Special Olympics team that departed for Delaware yesterday.
The pair are the most experienced members of the island’s team and expectations will be high for them to excel in the 100 meter dash at the University of Delaware Stadium in Newark, Delaware.
The island’s team is comprised of student athletes from CedarBridge and Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academies.
Bermuda’s Special Olympians are being coached by former Chicago Bears wide receiver Rickey Watts.
Watts, who played five seasons with the Bears, is anxious to see how his athletes perform in Delaware – particularly the island’s 4x100 relay team comprised of Delton Woods, Fabio Defrias, Trott and Peniston.
He said: “We have worked pretty hard on it and have some really fast kids that are going to run the 4x100 and I am excited to see how they actually do in competition.
“We have had some really good training sessions where the relay baton hand offs have come off really nice. Our time has come down consistently every time we have run the relay. So I am really excited about the opportunity of letting them run with other competition around.”
Bermuda captured the gold medal in the 1x400 relay during their previous appearance at the Delaware Special Olympics.
“The last time we were there we did a fantastic job and I hope this group can do the same,” Watts added. “We have had some really fast relays in Delaware every time we have competed there.”
Others expected to do well for Bermuda in Delaware are sprinters Laura Repose, Mahalia Maynard and Bridgett Marshall in the 50 and 100 metre dashes.
Perhaps the biggest surprise on the team this year has been wheelchair athlete Jaime Brangman who has impressed coaching staff and peers in training.
Brangman will represent the island in the short distance walking discipline.
