Bermuda to be made aware of migrant workers' plight
George Scott, chief union organizer of the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU), said migrants have faced abuse all over the globe and Bermuda isn’t immune.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Mr. Scott said: “In the Caribbean and Latin America, we have five islands, Jamaica, Bermuda, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Curacao, who are members of the Building Workers International (BWI).”
“We’re doing a campaign on bringing all the awareness of migrant workers and their rights. We will put out information on the rights of migrant workers.
“Government, associations within the community and employers are invited. But we’re asking the people themselves to come out and hear the speakers and hear the accolades.”
International Migrants Day is December 18 but the related events will be held in Bermuda on December 17.
Richenel Ilario of the BWI said: “Also, on that day, there will be a lunch. There will be a video about abuse of migrant workers all over the world. In that video, people will see what these migrant workers are confronted with daily.”
The BIU will work closely with the BWI and will provide more information about their plans as the event gets closer.
