BELCO sponsors Hurdle

Kevin Hurdle is the latest Bermuda national team cricket member to find sponsorship.

BELCO announced yesterday that the company has committed to support Bermuda's World Cup national team pace bowler Kevin Hurdle as he trains and prepares for the World Cup competition with the national team.

In making the announcement, BELCO President and chief executive officer Garry Madeiros said that the Company has agreed to retain Hurdle in spite of what will be long scheduled absences from BELCO and Bermuda as the national team bowler trains and competes overseas.

Hurdle will be playing for Kent in the U.K. this summer as he works on making sure his skills increase in preparation for the 2007 World Cup.

"We have provided this commitment up until the end of 2006 and will review Kevin's needs at the end of the year to determine requirements for further commitment as the team prepares for the March 2007 World Cup," Madeiros said.

Given the fact that Bermuda does not have a recognized field for international level cricket play, which requires the national team to spend long periods overseas, the Company feels it is appropriate to support the effort by taking care of the needs of one of our own.

"We see this as a partnership with Government and the Bermuda Cricket Board to support the needs of a key player and allow him to concentrate on his game and the contribution he can make to the team," Madeiros said.
