BEC backs Premier Paula
The Bermuda Employers’ Council congratulates Paula Cox on her appointment as Premier of Bermuda.
Over the years, Ms Cox has demonstrated her willingness to consult with stakeholders on matters of mutual interest and we look forward to a continuation of this approach.
It is only through dialogue and consultation that sound decision-making and progress can be made.
The BEC is also encouraged by the Premier’s vow to cut Government spending and her intention to take close control of contracts and procurement.
The ministerial and portfolio changes made by the Premier are far reaching.
We anticipate close working relationships developing between the employer community and the Ministers responsible for the economy, labour, international business, training, tourism and work permits.
These are key interfaces for the business community with Government.
The new allocation of responsibilities will require us to work closely with Minister Kim Wilson on labour relations, training and work permits as well as general economic matters. We look forward to early and regular dialogue with the Minister and her key advisors to help them appreciate and understand the real concerns and challenges the employer community is facing.
Likewise with Minister Patrice Minors. Having responsibility for sustaining and developing international business and tourism is of major importance for our economy. These two sectors form the basis upon which all others survive and thrive.
Because of this we again see a need for early and regular dialogue with the Minister and her key advisors.
There is always an element of a fresh beginning when leadership and ministerial changes occur and the significant changes Premier Cox has ushered in signal an opportunity for Bermuda.
It is becoming a cliché but it is true that we remain in tough economic times.
All the social partners — employers, Government, workers and individuals — need to work together to see us through our current challenges.
The chance to do this presents itself with these leadership and ministerial changes and the BEC is eager to play its part.
Martin Law is the executive director of the Bermuda Employers Council.
