Thousands of commuters passing through New York City's Grand Central Terminal’s historic Vanderbilt Hall experienced the full culture and excitement that Bermuda has to offer with a series of activities throughout the day which included performances from the Gombeys, live music by local musician Randy Lambert and Tempo, Bermudian food favorites, local hotelier presentations and a special evening rush hour Bermuda shorts fashion contest.
And the Minister of Business Development and Tourism, the Hon. Patrice K. Minors, JP, MP, who is currently in New York participating in the activities engaged in a full day of promoting the Island, starting with a luncheon with several prominent travel editors from such publications that included the Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Traveler, Departures Magazine, and Brides Magazine to name a few.
She spent the latter part of the afternoon and early evening mingling and talking with interested New Yorkers at Grand Central Station about Bermuda's appeal as a visitor destination.
Minister Minors said, "Grand Central is one of the world's busiest transit hubs and Bermuda was front and center amongst thousands of travellers who came through the station today. If you consider that the New York area represents a significant portion of our visitor arrivals, it's easy to understand that this market is a key lynchpin in our overall tourism success. So it was exciting to be a part of this event today which really showcased Bermuda to thousands on a such a grand scale."
Additional highlights from the Grand Central event included popular radio host Dan Taylor, broadcasting his number one WCBS-FM morning programme from the Station for four hours. BDOT Director William Griffith and Grotto Bay Beach Resort Resident Manager, Clyde Darrell were both interviewed on the show.
Bermuda also received three segments on the WPIX-TV Morning News. Combined, Bermuda reached well over one million listeners and viewers with the media and Grand Central activities yesterday.
The public will be aware that New York City is the final stop of a four-city BDOT promotional tour which has been going on since the beginning of March. Previous cities included Boston, Baltimore and Atlanta.
The New York marketing events officially wrap up today with Minister Minors being interviewed on Dan Taylor's morning show and later this evening, when she hosts a special dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for some 60 travel representatives.
