Bascome loses cricket board scholarship
The Bermuda Cricket Board's statement in full:
It is with regret and great disappointment that the BCB, today, announces the withdrawal of its scholarship support of Oronde Bascome at UWIC with immediate effect. After receiving unfavourable reports from both academic and cricketing staff at UWIC the BCB conducted a thorough investigation, including a number of meetings with Oronde and his parents in an attempt to rectify the situation.
On January 12th 2007, Oronde signed a supplemental scholarship commitment agreement (in addition to the standard BCB Athlete Scholarship Agreement) which clearly outlined a schedule for Oronde to follow in order to manage his studies more effectively, which included obtaining concessions and additional support from the University and its staff. Unfortunately a number of the conditions of this agreement were breached within a short time of his return to UWIC and the BCB had no other alternative than to terminate its scholarship support.
Mr. Reginald Pearman, BCB President, is quoted:
"I am very disappointed that this situation has arisen. The BCB regards its scholarship program with the utmost importance as one of its key building blocks of the BCB Development Program. However, in administering public and corporate funding for such initiatives, standards must be kept. It is unfortunate that we have no choice in the matter, despite extensive steps taken by the BCB to try and rectify the situation.
Oronde is a bright young man and a promising cricketer and I hope that he rebounds from this in a positive manner."
