Aussie rugby star booted off plane

World Cup winning rugby player Tony Daly - one of the stars bound for this year's rugby classic - was sent back to Australia and will play no part in the event after being questioned by the FBI when his team touched down at Los Angeles International Airport.

The prop forward, who scored the winning try in the 1991 World Cup Final, was interviewed by officers in connection with the theft of a fellow passenger's property - understood to be a wallet and sunglasses.

Aussie team manager Gary Ella told the Bermuda Sun yesterday that it had been quickly established that Daly had nothing to do with the incident and he was not charged with any offence.

But he said officers discovered that there was an outstanding traffic offence against him from a previous trip to the States and barred him from travelling through the country.

In an interview with the Australian Daily Telegraph, Daly said he had known he was not able to travel to the U.S., but had assumed that the outstanding offence would not be a problem as his ultimate destination was Bermuda

Daly, who played 41 times for Australia, was set to be one of the major stars of the event, which attracts golden oldies from across the globe to Bermuda every year.

Mr. Ella, who was settling in at the Fairmont Southampton yesterday afternoon with the rest of his squad, said: "There was some property on the plane that went missing and with him not being able to sleep and walking around the plane on a regular basis, some of the other passengers suggested he might have had something to do with it.

"He was held for questioning and the police brought no charges against him, but they discovered this traffic offence and decided he couldn't travel.

"I guess that's the law in the US, we weren't really in a position to argue.

"It's affected us all. It held up the whole group for quite a while. But it's been taken care of now and we're looking forward to the Classic."

John Kane, who organizes the event, said he only knew what he had read on the international news wires and could not comment on the incident.[[In-content Ad]]
