Alf Oughton to be honoured

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 22: The Premier of Bermuda  and Finance Minister  Paula A. Cox  JP MP extends her deepest condolences to the family and friends  of Former President of the Senate  Hon. Alfred (Alf) T. Oughton MA MSc, CBE .  

Mr. Oughton, spent most of his working life at Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) where he was known for his “ no nonsense/take charge” approach to leadership, he retired as CEO and President on August 1st 1992.

His political service started when he was appointed by the Governor as an independent Senator in  November of 1993 and he was elected to Senate President in March of 1998. On June 24, 2011, Mr. Oughton was the recipient of the Bermuda Health Foundation’s Salute to Service Award for his stellar work in the community, in particular for the thorough Health Care Review Report that he produced in May 1996.

The Premier States “Mr. Oughton” demonstrated his love for his country and its people through  words and action and I trust his family will take comfort in that fact that as a result of his sacrifice and service Bermuda is truly a better place”.

The funeral services for the Former President of the Senate Mr. Alf Oughton will take place of on Friday February 24th  at the St Ann’s Church in Southampton  commencing at 3:30pm.  Members of the Public are invited to Cabinet Office to sign the “Book of Condolences” starting tomorrow  February 22nd  2012 and flags on all Government buildings will be flown at half mast on Friday  out of respect for the Late Senate President.
