Callous crooks targeted a children’s nursery, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

They ransacked the Kiddie Academy and even ripped out the security recording equipment to cover their tracks.

It is the fourth time that the nursery on Laffan Street in Hamilton has been targeted over the years. The latest break-in took place on Thursday night and left its owner, Sharon DeSilva, frustrated. She told the Bermuda Sun: “Who would target a nursery? I just do not understand why anyone would break into a place that cares for children.

“I feel like I have a big target sign on my back and I am fed up with picking up the pieces each time we are broken into.”

Ms DeSilva arrived at work on Friday morning to find that burglars had smashed a kitchen window to gain access and then ransacked her office and stolen around $70 in petty cash.

She added: “We had security cameras installed around the property some time ago to try and prevent this kind of thing.

“But on this occasion these guys have smashed down the front door to my office, thrown all my paperwork and documentation all over the place and stolen the security recording equipment.

“They have actually cut the wires leading to the DVD machine that is hooked up to the cameras and they have taken the DVD machine when they have left.

“The security system is worth around $7,000 and we will need to install it all over again. We will also need to replace the door to my office and the kitchen window they smashed breaking in.

“I’m sick and tired of having to deal with this kind of thing. Fortunately we stopped leaving large sums of money on the premises a long time ago – so we only lost $70 in cash this time. But that is still a significant sum of money to lose.

“It’s so frustrating and it’s obviously not ideal when parents were arriving on Friday morning and there were police and forensic officers walking around the nursery. They obviously wanted to know what was going on.”

• Police are investigating. Anyone with information should call 295 0011.
