Jason Sukdeo, also known as D’General has been spinning the best soca music in Bermuda since 2006. He is known as the Soca King in the DJ world because of his ability to play the most current music with the best mixes.

His friends gave him the name, D’General when he started playing music.

“Much like an army general, friends say I have the tendency to be able to analyze a situation, plan a way to make it better and then execute that plan.”

D’General will be playing at some of the hottest parties of the holiday season including Live Yuh Life — Happiest Man Alive, a soca fete that will be held at Docksiders on December 27.

On New Year’s Eve, D’General will play host and DJ at Back to the Future, a dinner and dance party that will be held at the Coco Reef Resort.

Aside from the music world, Jason is 34 and works in IT at Barcardi. Mikaela Ian Pearman sat down with the DJ to find out more what makes him spin.

Your earliest memory?

Riding through the neighbourhood and the railway trails in Warwick and Paget all day with my good friend, Ryan, and/or my sister, when she could keep up! Those Saturday afternoons, I had no care in the world, other than whether or not my bike tyres had air. The brakes didn’t even need to work. The only thing I had to think about was being home before dark.

What were you like in school?

I was quiet in school. Usually lunchtime was spent in a music room, chess club or with Heidi. I was in every band programme offered by Warwick Academy  that allowed a trombone player. I loved computers and science. For a lack of a better word… I was a geek!

Who is your hero/heroine?

My parents. They, both together and individually have made numerous sacrifices and tough decisions to allow my sister and I to be where we are today. Now, being a parent myself, I can see and truly appreciate just how tough of a task this is. Thank you.

What animal would you be and why?

I’m thinking a Lion. King of the jungle, no one eats Lion for dinner.

Which human trait do you dislike the most?

Close-mindedness. This, in combination with fear, holds us back from great things.

Human trait you value most in others?

A logical and practical thinker.

Which film character would you be?

Bradley Cooper in Limitless… infinite brainpower would be awesome!

When did you last laugh out loud? And why?

Saturday. I was with my friends Bri and Jah at Inferno Lounge. Those two are always good for a laugh! We had a few laugh out loud moments. Look who’s coming...

Do you believe in fate?

No. God makes that stuff happen!

Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought?

Transportation would be next on the list. My van was a necessity to grow the business. It has proven to be a worthwhile expense!

Your greatest fear?

Not being the best father I can be.

Your ultimate ambition?

My current goals include furthering my career in IT and getting more involved in how Bermuda can do better as a country for its people. I would like to be one of the citizens who invoke positive change, make a contribution, and not just exist and complain about the current situation. If it’s wrong, fix it! Why wait for someone else to do it?

Describe yourself in three words

Intelligent, down-to-earth (two hyphens makes that one word right?!) and Fun.

Best party you’ve ever been to?

In 2010, Machel Montano performed in Miami. I bought a ticket and went down for this show and was not disappointed. He performed for close to two hours in a small intimate setting; solo, without a band or any of the other members of the HD family. He went through everything from old to new, slow to fast. That was a great party. It was raw, uncut, unrehearsed and showed undisputable talent!

Worst job you’ve ever done?

The night shift at Rogers Cable up in Ontario was my worst job. I drove through snow to spend hours on the phone listening to someone else’s Internet problems.

Closest you’ve ever come to death?

Probably one of those care-free Saturdays with no brakes. Other than that, an occasion I can definitely remember was a car accident on highway 401 in Scarborough, Ont. My car hydroplaned, and spun a few times before hitting the guardrail. That was scary.

What do you do if you can’t sleep?

Watch the DIY channel or the Food Network.

If you had a time machine, where would you go?

Forward, so I can see my mistakes and learn from them.

Your most memorable dream?

*** Blocked due to inappropriate content ***

Most unpleasant exchange you’ve have had with a person?

Dealing with a vendor who had no regard for the impact of his punctuality and the domino effect of what couldn’t get done as a result. Unapologetically late gets under my skin.

Nicest thing anyone has ever said to you?

I love you Daddy

Best advice you have ever taken?

Finish my degree.

Anyone you’d like to say ‘sorry’ to?

I usually try to apologize as soon as I know I’ve done wrong, so I can’t think of anyone that I haven’t already apologized to… that being said, I apologize if I’m forgetting anyone!

Your most unappealing habit?

I’ve been accused of being too practical. My emotional side doesn’t always surface when it should. A healthy balance would be ideal.

What’s your attitude to money?

Responsibilities first, then spend it, enjoy life! The memories gained are worth much more! Your tombstone won’t say what the current balance of your savings account is!

Your desert island song?

There’s no way I can pick just one!

What do you most dislike about you appearance?

The lack of a 6-pack!

What do you like best about your appearance?

The progress I’m making to the 6-pack!

Which cartoon character is most like you?

Brain, Tam – my sister was Pinky… NARF!

Most treasured possession?

Google Calendar/Contacts/GMail, I’d be lost without it… but I don’t even own it……. Wait, so do they own me?!?!?

A dream location for a home?

On the water

What keeps you up at night?

James & Becca’s outdoor furniture upstairs!!! Fortunately, I don’t have a problem falling asleep! I can sleep through just about anything.

Guilty pleasure?

Haagen-Daz Cookies and Cream Ice Cream

Name some favourite:

— TV shows/TV series: Big Bang Theory, Scandal & Suits

— movies: Taken, Oceans 11

— books: Haven’t read anything other than studying lately… they don’t qualify as favorites!

— dishes: It’s a tie between Steak and Curry

— vacation spots: Florida

Your attitude to exercise?

Its necessary to live your best life!

Your proudest achievement?

For now, being a homeowner. Next year, it’ll be a degree!

If you were a pigeon, who would you poop on?

If I told you, then they would know!!

If you won a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Pay off debts, give some to Mom, Dad and Tam, invest for education, bring Machel Montano, Kes & Destra to Bermuda and then buy one of those money trees Mom keeps talking about, because I still can’t find that one she kept saying was outside in the yard.

Most important lesson life has taught you?

When (not if) life gives you lemons, make lemonade, lemon cake, lemon meringue, do something, don’t sit and wait for them to change on their own.
