What do you get when you combine a Brady Bunch style family, two pastors and a whole bunch of money? Thicker Than Water, one of the newest shows on Bravo.
Thicker Than Water follows Ben and Jewel Tankard and their blended family. Ben is a gospel/jazz musician who used to play professional basketball. He married Jewel in 2000 and their families became one.
There are three daughters — Brooklyn, Britney and Cyrene and one son, Benji. Oh and don’t forget Benji’s wife, Shanira.
The Tankards are very wealthy and want everyone in the world to know it. They are very boastful about their wealth – a huge turn-off.
Ghetto in heaven?
Ben, the ‘Quincy Jones of gospel’ claims the Lord wants everyone to be wealthy and says there is “no ghetto section in heaven”. Jewel refers to herself as a “black Barbie” and will not fly unless she’s on a private plane.
The couple own private jets and have matching his and hers Mercedes Benz. It’s very over the top and off putting.
Wealth aside, the couple own a church outside of Nashville, Tenessee and don’t take home salaries. Their message seems to be that God wants you to be wealthy, as wealth is what they talk about 24/7.
Jewel speaks at workshops encouraging women to figure out how to be rich.
Their children are a mess. Brooklyn, 24 has a ten-year-old daughter named Diamond and at one point ran a strip club. Britney, 22, seems responsible with her nine to five job, but she’s had run-ins with the law.
Let’s not forget Benji, 21, who had an athletic scholarship in university but failed drug tests and got kicked out.
Cyrene, 17 is the hope that something in the family will come out right.
The show and the family are both pretty much a mess, but an entertaining mess. While I do agree with a lot of what they say, I wish they were more humble.
But then again, they are new money so I wouldn’t expect anything else.
Thicker Than Water airs on Sunday’s on Bravo.
