A 39-year-old man was today jailed for 30 days after he admitted passing counterfeit money.
Tio Weeks of Devonshire went into Market Place on Church Street at 6pm on November 18 and went to the cashier with a six-pack of Elephant Beer.
As the cashier was processing the sale, Weeks gave her a $50 bill in Bermuda currency. The cashier then gave him change of $35.25.
Weeks then left the store.
The court heard after he walked away, the cashier noticed the bill was fake and told a packer to go and get Weeks. But Weeks got into a car and left the area.
Police were called and the fake bill was handed over to them. Weeks was arrested on November 26 and during an interview, he said a man gave him the note to buy beers.
He also said he didn't know the money was fake until he went to get the beers.
Addressing the court, Weeks said: “It was an honest mistake. I didn't know it was counterfeit.
“I work so to pass off $50 for beers is not in my character. I took a run into the shop for someone.
“I know you probably don’t believe me. I’m trying to be nice and I’m sorry for making off the other day in court.”
Mr Warner jailed Weeks for 30 days for the offence to run concurrent to his current prison term. Weeks was jailed for two years last week for a violent attack on his ex-girlfriend.
