The Christmas panto Sleeping Beauty opened to an invited audience last night and officially opens this evening at Daylesford Theatre.
Just ahead of the show, families enjoyed a Christmas Fairyland that was set up in the theatre car park with cotton candy, cupcakes, pizza sticks and crafts stalls. It will be there before every show and, as of tonight, the children will be able to have their photo taken with Santa Claus.
The dress rehearsal went well and the crowd laughed, hooted and screamed out throughout the show.
All 22 performances of this year’s pantomime, written by Carol Birch with original music by James Burn, have sold out.
Venue change
There are slightly fewer seats than previous years as the show is being held in the smaller Daylesford Theatre rather than City Hall.
Although there are more performances than usual there was still a shortfall. It was one of the only times in Bermuda’s panto history that the show was not performed at City Hall and this was due to a booking conflict.
The play is loosely based on the traditional tale. An evil witch Evilena (Jennifer Osmond) puts a curse on Briar Rose (Mikaela Kawaley-Lathan) who will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep. Everybody bands together to help this Sleeping Beauty, and the wonderful Prince Felix (Chris Dyer) could be the answer to her dreams.
There are a host of dames including Stephen Notman as Fairy Babble and Alan Brooks as Fairy Batsie. Theatre veteran Connie Dey plays the Queen of Messy Plutonium in her 20th pantomime.
The show runs at Daylesford until December 14.
