Back in the day: Royal reception
Last week’s ‘Back in the Day’ photo proved to be the most popular yet. Chic Moniz, Ed Williams, Al Seymour Jr, David Lopes, Edward Williams, Darlene Ming and Sinclair Rayner all confirmed that the ‘dashing broadcaster’ was none other than Wilf Davidson on ZBM Channel 10, at their old location on Bermudiana Road.
“ [Wilf Davidson] was a Canadian who worked a great number of years for Bermuda Broadcasting Co. Ltd. As a young reporter I had the pleasure of preparing many newscasts for Wilf, who anchored the news on ZBM television. He also hosted ‘Date Before Dinner’ and did the local ‘live’ breaks for late night movies on what was then Channel 10. –— Darlene Ming
“Nobody knew the Queen’s English like Wilf. He was a great mentor. The guy never made a mistake” said David Lopes, adding that Mr Davidson went for dinner every night at the New Queen Chinese restaurant (where Washington Mall is now).
Sinclair Rayner told the story of how, during the newscast, a fly was buzzing around Mr Davidson’s head, then suddenly disappeared.
The broadcaster, who had not missed a beat, revealed afterwards that he had caught the fly under his tongue and kept it there until the programme ended.
