Celeb Watch: Handbag quip cited by Oprah as racist
Oprah Winfrey has been in the news all this week thanks to an unfortunate brush with alleged racism.
For those of you who don’t know, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote her role in ‘The Butler’, Mama O was asked about racism she had experienced, she described a recent incident in a boutique in Zurich.
Winfrey told the reporter she asked to see a $38,000 Tom Ford bag but the sale associate wouldn’t show it to her. Instead, the woman pointed her to less expensive bags and told her she couldn’t afford the more expensive bag.
Winfrey didn’t divulge the name of the store, but after the interview, the shop’s owner Trudie Goetz denied the star was discriminated against because of her race.
The store is called Trois Pommes. Goetz said in an interview that the sales woman explained to Winfrey that the bag was very expensive and tried to show her lower priced bags.
Basically, this woman is confirming exactly what Winfrey said.
What the shop owner fails to realise is that racism is rarely blatant. The woman might not have thought she was being racist, but it seems clear she denied Winfrey the opportunity of buying the bag because she thought she couldn’t afford it.
Was it because she’s black? Or maybe it’s because she wasn’t dressed to the nines and wasn’t dripped in designer duds?
At the end of the day, there was discrimination of some kind.
Usher’s five-year-old son Usher V, known as Cinco almost drowned in a pool at the singer’s home.
The boy dove down in the pool to get a toy and got his hand stuck in the drain. He was being watched by his Aunt Rena who tried along with the nanny to get the boy out.
Two men who were working at the home managed to free him.
Sad story. The worst part is that Usher’s ex-wife, Tameka Raymond immediately filed a custody review (Usher was granted full custody earlier this year after she was deemed unfit). The application was denied.
It’s important to note that last year when her older son Kile died in a Jet Ski accident, Tameka did not seek an immediate custody hearing for her other children from her first husband.
What mother in her right mind immediately files a custody hearing after her child almost dies?
As a mother, it would make more sense to be at the hospital with your child instead of meeting with lawyers over an accident that could have happened anywhere. Just my two cents.
