Cup Match 2013: Trott praises Somerset batsmen

St George’s Rodney Trott tipped his hat to Somerset’s batsmen after his side escaped Cup Match with a draw.

Under the pump for the majority of the match, the home side were always fending off a powerful opposition at Wellington Oval.

Trott’s 48 in the first innings and his calm batting as the light faded in St George’s second innings were crucial in doing enough to prevent the first Somerset win in the east end for 32 years.

Trott told the Bermuda Sun: “You have to give credit where credit is due. Somerset did very well on the first day. They batted exceptionally. The wicket started to deteriorate but that’s how it goes, that’s all part of cricket.

“After the first innings I thought we did well to come back and hold them to a draw and it was a good team performance.

“Somerset showed good character. Tre Manders did well and that partnership with Janeiro was excellent.”

Trott was distraught he failed to get his half century after he was beaten by a quick Kamau Leverock delivery after doing so much work to hold the home side’s innings together.

He said: “That’s all part of cricket. Hopefully I can get it next year but it wasn’t meant to be I guess.

“This is a young team and you have to start from somewhere, in the next three or four years they will play a lot more and learn more. The experience of yesterday in the field and today will only help us.”
