Graveyards are sacred places

I was made aware of a very sobering situation the other day whilst talking to a few of my Devil’s Hole friends.  

The issue is the matter of the Tucker’s Town Graveyard — a matter that has been in the hot seat for sometime here in Bermuda.  

I was under the impression that the matter had been resolved and all was well, but I have learnt that this is not the case; in fact, you could say it is worse now than it was when the matter first evolved.

My friends who have ancestors buried there are quite upset and feel that the site should stay as it was.

History

They feel it should be and forever more remain the final resting place of their beloved family members.  

I tend to agree. It was even mentioned that the cemeteries are meant to be a resting place, as many of the tombstones are inscribed ‘Rest in Peace’.

But it seems some take this to mean ‘Rouse it perpetually’, as there are certain persons who seem to not let the graveyard and its occupants rest.

Some may say well it was a long time ago, etc.

However, it wasn’t that long ago that burials took place there — less than 200 years.

History must always be preserved and honoured for the sake of  future generations. 

It is even so much more important that we respect this particular burial site as many of the descendants of the persons buried there are still alive;  and certainly have a connection that should be respected, and thus warrants consideration to do the utmost to leave these grounds alone and in peace.

This particular cemetery reflects important cultural values and practices of the past that can instruct us about who we are as a people. 

The preservation of this site allows not only learning, but ensures that the burial site is respected and continues to be available for future generations. 

Indeed it has been documented that cemeteries reflect important cultural values and practices of the past that can give us some insight as to who we are as a people. 

The transitions from this world to the next and the disposal of the deceased are serious matters in all cultures and religions. 

In Islam death is treated with great respect and dignity. 

“Allah has created death and life that He may try which of you is best in conduct. He is the Mighty, the Most Forgiving.” (Holy Quran 67:3) 

“God replied, ‘I will inflict My punishment on whom I will; but My mercy encompasses all things’.” (Holy Quran 7:157)

Let’s bury this matter once and for all, let’s put it to rest. The burial grounds where our loved ones lie must be respected.  

The final earthly resting place of those laid there should be just that — their final resting place of peace. Ameen.
