Calendar Girls actor Alan Brooks braved the shave and raised more than $4,800 for cancer care charity PALS in the process.
Daylesford Theatre was packed to the rafters as Brooks sat in the barber’s chair and watched his precious locks come off. He originally agreed to shave off his hair for his role as the Leukaemia patient in the play which opened yesterday, but then decided he might as well raise money at the same time.
Guests took turns to shave small sections of his hair off for an extra $10 payment, which helped to boost the funds. Brooks is to play John Clark in the play that started yesterday at City Hall. The play tells the story of a Women’s Institute (WI) group that raises money for a memorial for John (played by Brooks) after he dies of cancer.
Based on a true story, they come up with the innovative idea to pose naked for a calendar, covering only the essentials, while doing everyday WI tasks like cooking and knitting which raises more money than they could have dreamed of.
A Bermuda version of the calendar has been printed and will be on sale at the City Hall shows, through the Bermuda Musical and Dramatics Society website www.bmds.bm, www.chc.bm or http://www.express.bm/BoxOffice/Default.aspx
The money raised from sales will go towards PALS, Agape House and the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. Calendar Girls will be performed tonight, tomorrow night and April 17 to 20 at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall. Visit bmds.bm for more details.
