Some leaders forget they are the servants of the people

When will you get it? The only reason you are a leader is because there is a people in need and you are in the place to bring about that which the people stand in need of.

While it is powerful being the leader, it is more powerful to lead knowing that the real power is in the hands of the people. Hence, a leader should live daily to see that every decision he makes brings more comfort to the people.

Whether you like it or not, a leader is a servant to the people. How sad that there are leaders who make the critical error of distancing themselves from the people. Most people see this as akin to abandonment. When the people feel this way, it will not be long before they turn on that leader and seek to have that leader replaced.

Nehemiah 7: Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

8: And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

Such will not be the case with the leader, King Artaxerxes. No, he will find out what is going on and do what is in his power to facilitate a clear way of help for Nehemiah.

Respect

Nehemiah has already expressed his desire that the king continue to rule for many years to come. Note the level of love and respect between Nehemiah and the king. The king is ready to assist his loyal servant with whatever will sooth his sorrowful heart.

The king has authority. His name and his signature carry authority also.

Since Nehemiah has to travel a great distance, the king sends him with a letter that will let other leaders know that Nehemiah has his permission to enter into their land and make it back to his homeland of Judah.

Not only does the king give Nehemiah letters that will help him to travel, the king also gives him an additional letter, which will be given to Asaph, the gatherer of timber or the supplier of wood.

Because of the good heart of this leader, King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah will be given what he needs to build the palace in Jerusalem, build the walls, and even build the place where he will stay.

What is the meaning of the king’s generosity in the context of this whole biblical account? It means that King Artaxerxes can be given much credit for helping the people of God rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Isn’t that amazing. God will touch the heart of a non-Jew or a heathen and they will fulfil God’s plan so that God’s people will be blessed.

A good leader will not prevent his people from favour that he can supply. A good king appreciates those who serve him with diligence and integrity.

Seek first to honour God in all you do, carry it forth with excellence, be assured that someone is watching you, and in time they will honour you.

Respice finem.
