Between the blues, the buffet and the bubbly there was a particularly touching moment at WindReach’s summer fundraiser.
As the charity’s founder, Sandy Mitchell, stepped forward to address the 200 or so guests that had gathered in the paddock he was greeted by a spontaneous standing ovation.
His cheeky request to see WindReach executive director Lance Furbert pick up the drumsticks and play for the first time in more than 20 years may have fallen on deaf ears.
But the clapping hands were a glowing indictment of the work he and the charity have championed.
Mr. Mitchell started WindReach Bermuda just over 10 years ago and since then it has gone from strength to strength.
Just last year it arranged for international coaches and Paralympic athletes to visit Bermuda to help local sports stars with disabilities.
This year’s summer fundraiser was also a showcase for Bermudian bands.
Bones, The Travellers, Working Title and Prestege played an upbeat and eclectic selection of blues, classic sixties tracks as well as modern rock tunes.
The entertainment continued long into the night while the clean up was still in full swing in the early hours of the morning.
Mr. Furbert said: “Everyone who I spoke to said they had a great time.
“A lot of work went into organizing the event but when you see everyone enjoying themselves it makes it all worth it.
“We were very pleased to have all the Bermudian bands performing for us and help make it such a great evening.”
It is hoped that the summer fundraiser raised at least $20,000.
