The Underground Music Awards has teamed up with young entrpreneur charity Youth on the Move to bring a message of peace to next month’s three-day event.

Now in its sixth year, the urban music showdown has always tried to incorporate different elements into the awards and this year organizer Jonathan (JT) Talbot believes promoting an anti-violence message is of the highest priority.

To help to do this, he approached Youth on the Move director Chae Powell who has organized for a number of music industry professionals to talk at a free event associated with the awards called Beat de Streets on the Friday, 8 June. It will be followed by a cruise aboard the Elizabeth from 10pm.

HOTT 1075 radio host Thaao Dill will act as moderator for the night and will be talking about getting into radio while former prisoner Ronae (Slanger) Burgess will be there to talk about the dire consequences of a life of violence from a first person point of view. Engineer Shane Woodley who was an engineer at one of JayZ’s studios will talk about how to get your music mastered. There will be other speakers at this free event which hopes to demonstrate to youngsters this positive alternative to a life of crime while giving them a real taste of the industry.

Director of Youth on the Move Chae Powell said: “I wanted to give budding musicians the opportunity to be in a space where they can talk to industry people and have questions related to their craft answered.

“The event aims to give people an alternative to violence and gang culture. Anyone interested in music should come along. You will be in a safe, alcohol free environment and get to talk to industry people and there will be a couple of surprises too. If you are passionate about music then come on Friday night — you can just be surrounded by young, likeminded people.”

Mr. Talbot added: “A lot of young kids are being  steered the wrong way. This year we wanted to partner with someone who can bring the awareness to young people. We have come up with something that is not only entertaining but also informative about the music business.”

On the Thursday evening there will be a meet and greet and a music video showcase at the Outback in Flanagan’s Bar which has been organized by Dunn Deal Entertainment. This is the first year there will be a music video category in the awards. Thursday is a good night for anyone aspiring towards a career on stage as three new up and coming artists will get the chance to get up and perform.

Saturday night is the highlight of the three days — the red carpet and the Underground Music Awards. See the side panel for exact times and locations of all three events. DJ Tracie Steel from Atlanta will be hosting the awards and on the Friday she will talk about getting radio play in an overseas market.

The awards feature a new soca artist from St. Vincent, Tabia Matthews, who has just done a song with reggae star, Beenie Man. Mr. Talbot tipped Khaaild (KD) Lovell and Imari Wade, both rappers, as doing well.

Do these awards cover only Rap, R&B and Reggae? What about Rock, Electronic music, Art music, and experimental music?

I agree with Sean. There is a young man by the name of Dainovan Tuzo who has an awesome gospel album! He wrote and produced it! He performed at the Music Festival. I am SHOCKED that he is not listed!
