Bermudian filmmaker Lucinda Spurling hopes to help students learn about our rich and fascinating history after donating copies of her award-winning film to the island's public schools.
The Lion and the Mouse, released in March this year, charts our 400-year history in seven acts and focuses on the historical relationship between Bermuda and America during that time.
As well as copies of the documentary, Ms. Spurling has donated accompanying study guides to Bermuda's public schools.
Each act takes us through our various stages of history starting with Bermuda as an agricultural hub leading to grow into a thriving maritime economy making way for our crucial military role.
It tells how following World War II our tourism industry took off and how a number of hurricanes on the east coast of America made way for us to become a major global player in the reinsurance industry and a hot bed of international business.
Accepting the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Education Dr. Llewellyn Simmons, director of academics said: "Lucinda Spurling, with the film production of The Lion and Mouse, continues to build upon the creativity in literary and art form that expands the creative genius of Bermuda's children."
Educate and entertain
Ms Spurling added: "The launch of The Lion and the Mouse study guides, DVDs and website in the school system is the final step in a project that started three years ago.
"My main objective with documentaries is to educate and entertain and to use this powerful visual medium to reach out to students. I would also like to thank my sponsors, who made this educational outreach possible."
Ms Spurling also announced that she has received an offer to distribute the film with negotiations ongoing.
DVDs are available for purchase locally at Animal and Garden House, Leisure Time, Pulp and Circumstance, the Bookmart, A.S. Cooper's, The Book Cellar, Robertson's and the Aquarium. All proceeds go toward the costs of Outreach.
New website
A website has also been launched at www.thelionandthemouse.org where information can be found about the film as well as the study guide which can be downloaded for free.
Ms Leona Scott, Education officer for social studies said: "This is a welcomed addition to the many Bermuda resources that have been developed this century.
"I am sure that teachers will find multiple uses for this new resource".
The Lion and the Mouse, narrated by Michael Douglas, features interviews with historians, archival footage, and dramatic recreation. The series was screened at the Bermuda International Film Festival, winning the festival's audience choice award.
Ms Spurling was awarded the 2009 Doreen Lightbourn/Lionel Pearman Award by the Ministry of Culture and Social Rehabilitation along with the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs for the film.
