Khano's an instant hit at Lincoln
Colin Thompson
Sports reporter

It took Khano Smith just 76 minutes to win over the Lincoln City crowd during his debut for the Imps at Sincil Park on Saturday.

The Bermuda International stood out among a five-man midfield and almost got his name on the scoresheet - a success that would have given him a dream start to his English football career.

Sadly his shot was saved at the near post - but Smith had done enough to impress City boss Chris Sutton, the former Chelsea midfielder.

Reflecting on the Bermudian's performance during City's scoreless draw with Torquay United, Sutton said: "I thought Khano did decently.

"He hasn't played for a long time and he was a threat for us. The new boy came in and did well for us."

The former MLS player signed a short-term deal with the Imps earlier this month and is enjoying both his new surroundings and a warm welcome from City's loyal fans.

Smith said: "It was a good experience and a very different type of atmosphere from what I am used to back in the United States.

"The crowds over here (in the U.K.) are very knowledgeable and really appreciate every aspect of the game.

"They applaud whenever you win corners or close people down and that makes you want to work even harder."

The Imps were lucky to come away with a scoreless draw against Torquay, who dominated for long spells.

Smith said: "We didn't play too well and we were lucky to get a draw because Torquay were pressuring us.

"But at the end of the day we didn't lose and we're happy to come away with a point."

Smith claims he was satisfied with his performance but admits there is always room for improvement.

He said: "Obviously there were a few things I felt I could have done better but overall I think I did okay.

"It was my first competitive game since the end of July and the manager told me he was happy."

Watching Smith's debut was former Dellwood student Reggie Lambe, who is now cutting his teeth at Ipswich Town.

He and his mother made the three-hour drive to City's ground to watch his national squad teammate in action.

Smith said: "It was good to see Reggie. I've known him since he was a youngster growing up around Dandy Town.

"I also taught him for a year at Dellwood so it was good to see how he has matured. Hopefully I will get the chance to see him play."

Smith is expected to retain his place in Sutton's starting 11 for Saturday's away clash with Morecambe.
