Khano: We're all fighting for our jobs
James Whittaker
Senior Reporter

Bermuda's only pro soccer players Khano Smith is confidant he can reignite his career and the New York Red Bulls miserable season.

Smith admitted that all the Red Bulls squad were 'fighting for our jobs' after a shocking start to the season which has seen them win just two games.

The winger, who has made just six starts at his new club, had been rumoured to be on his way out with coach Juan Carlos Osario on the look out for reinforcements.

But 28-year-old Smith insists he still has plenty to offer in the MLS and can help inspire a revival at the Red Bulls in the second half of the season.

"It's been tough for me not playing and with the side not winning. I've come back into the side in the past few weeks and I've felt good but there is no fitness like match fitness and if I can play week in, week out I feel I can get a lot better."

Smith said it was down to the whole Red Bulls squad to pull them out of the mire,

"The spirit in the squad is still good. Everybody's got each others' backs. We've got to stick together and pull through it.

"I'd love the chance to turn this around but it's not going to be just me. It's the whole side's responsibility.

"We've got a lot of good players but for some reason it's not been clicking."

Smith appeared as a second half sub in the Red Bulls 2-1 loss to FC Dallas earlier this week.

He said it had been a frustrating experience spending much of the season on the bench but added that he would be professional and try to take his chances when they came.

"We're all fighting for our jobs. The MLS is not like other leagues where you get a four-year contract and you're guaranteed to stay for four years.

"I'm still here fighting for this team and I will be until they tell me otherwise."

And he believes the Red Bulls can still revive their season.

"We can still make the play-offs. It's an outside chance but stranger things have happened.

"The majority of our remaining games are at home. We play LA here next week and we need to pick up three points."

Austrian winger Ernst Obster has been linked with a move to the Red Bulls but Smith insists that will not affect his status at the club.

"I don't know if he's coming or not, that's not up to me. Players come and go all the time, there's always competition for places. I can play in a number of positions so it's not a concern."
