Footballers to get MLS trial
Antwon Russell and Cud-Joe Matthews to get a chance with the Chicago Fire
James Whittaker
Senior Reporter

Dandy Town striker Antwon Russell and Boulevard defender Cud-Joe Matthews head out for trials with MLS side Chicago Fire this afternoon.

The talented pair, both 20, will have a week-long trial at Chicago's pre-season training camp in Florida.

If they impress they will join the team on a tour of Mexico and could be playing against fellow Bermudian Khano Smith in America's top soccer league when the season kicks off in April.

Russell, whose previous attempts to win a pro contract were hampered by injury and his fear of flying, said he was determined to make the most of this opportunity.

"I always said to the people around me. If I get out there, I ain't coming back. This has been a dream since before I can even remember," he said.

Right-back Matthews said he couldn't wait to get out there and show what he could do.

"Not a lot of footballers get this kind of opportunity, especially Bermudian footballers. I'm really grateful to get the chance, now I have to make the most of it."

The trials have been hooked up by David Bascome, who was impressed by the youngsters when they played in his small-sided Island Soccer League over the summer at the National Centre.

Bascome used to play with new Chicago Fire coach Dennis Hamlett at Harrisburg and is scouting Bermudian players for his old friend.

He hopes Russell and Matthews could be the first in a pipeline of players from the ISL to Chicago and other major league clubs in the U.S.

"There were several players I was looking to get out there but it all comes down to what the club is looking for at the time. Chicago Fire is looking for young talent that they can work on."

Bascome's ISL is picking up the bill to fly the players to Florida for the training week. And the veteran indoor footballer believes the pair have a big future in stateside soccer.

"A lot of the players they will be competing with are coming out of college. In terms of talent they can definitely match them.

"The biggest thing for the players coming from Bermuda will be the professionalism. They have got to stay disciplined, stay focused and work hard.

"Even if things don't work out for them at Chicago Fire, if they give a good account of themselves, other sides will take a look at them."

Russell, who pulled out of a trial with Bascome's side Baltimore Blast because of injury last year, added: "I'm ready for it this time. I'm fully fit, I'm good to go."

He said his form had only been average so far this season and he hadn't hit the net as much as he would have liked.

"I think I should play some of my best football out there, though. If I can't get up for this, I can't get up for anything.

"This is the Chicago Fire - it's the top level in the U.S. I believe I'm ready. I always thought If I got the chance I would take it."

Russell, who played for Storm in the ISL where he was coached by Bascome's brother Andrew, said he thought his main attributes where his pace and first touch.

Matthews, who helped the Kings become the first winners of the ISL, said he was grateful to the league and to Bascome for putting him in the spotlight.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's something I've wanted for a long time. I'm really grateful to David Bascome for what he's doing and getting me the opportunity. Now I have to deal with the other part."

Matthews said he didn't watch the MLS too much apart from when Khano Smith was on, playing for the New England Revolution.

"I'd love to play against him and I think it would be really exciting for Bermuda to have two players against each other in the MLS."
