There's a new way for web-savvy job hunters to search for openings.

Website designer and consultant Ralph Richardson launched www.theladder.bm on Monday, a site that lists vacant positions in a wide array of trades and professions.

It's not the first jobs website in Bermuda, but it might be the first one not tied to a recruitment agency.

The week-old site already has dozens of posted job openings; everything from accountants, truck drivers, cashiers, butchers, dental hygienists, salespeople, managers and electricians.

"We want [the site] to be for everybody," Mr. Richardson said. "We want Bermudians of all trades or industries to come and look for a job."

For the next 90 days, it'll be free for employers to post jobs on the site. After that, it'll cost $150 to post an ad for 30 days.

But for non-profit organizations and charities, posting a job opening on the website will be free, so long as they're registered with the Centre on Philanthropy.

Mr. Richardson also said he has an arrangement with the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation to offer small business owners 50 per cent off the posting price.

Small business owners can go to the BSBDC's Church Street office to get the promotion code that'll get them the posting discount, Mr. Richardson said.

The Ladder.com is a side project for Mr. Richardson, who's partnered with Bermynet.com to promote the job site.

His main web design and consultancy business - Maven Concepts - includes clients such as Belco, C Travel, AS Coopers, Rapture Lingerie and the Phoenix Stores.

Asked is there is a need for this kind of website in Bermuda, Mr. Richardson said: "Yes, I think there's a need. We want to help Bermudian kids to understand what kind of jobs are out there.

"We're going to make it free to post jobs in the student jobs section area, so when kids come back home for a winter break, they can get job experience," he said.

"We'll also promote training programmes on the site to make sure there are all kinds of ways for people to gain experience."

He also said it's important to show the young that there is a wide range or career opportunities open to them. "That's a big job," he said. "I took time off to [talk] at local high schools. There are a lot of positions out there [other than accountancy jobs]."

The overriding goal is to instill a good work ethic in the youth.

"My hat goes off to anyone who gets up and puts in a full [day's work] and does a good job," he said.

The website isn't advertising driven, but there's room for companies looking to sponsor it.

"Sponsorship is a good way to promote our clients," he said. "We're not going to have the site strewn with ads, but we'll have about six to eight spots for them."

The site also features RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds that make it possible for organizations to keep track of new job postings the moment they're posted.

A great job Mr. Richardson is doing for Bermudians. I visit Bermuda regularly and there is a need for that kind of information.
