Are you better off now than you were in '98?
Jubilation: The PLP’s first election victory, spearheaded by then-Premier Jennifer Smith, was greeted with broad optimism. For some, the goodwill been replaced by deep scepticism. *File photo

As I watched the election returns with my mother, father, siblings and other family friends the sense of accomplishment and excitement in the air was palpable. The PLP was finally on the verge of victory!

We got it right with the old Technical Institute
It’s really too bad we didn’t capitalise on one of the biggest success stories in our education history, the Bermuda Technical Institute (BTI or “the Tech”) that transformed the lives of over 600 Bermuda boys.

Most unionists now work for Government
In 1981 the powerful Bermuda Industrial Union, then led by Mr. Ottiwell Simmons, flexed its muscles and brought Government and Bermuda to a standstill in the General Strike of 1981.

Letters: Single moms move to U.K. for benefit cash
In your article, Sheelagh Cooper and Fern Wade encourage single mothers who have several children with different fathers to move to the U.K. with the sole aim of benefiting from Britain’s generous benefits system.

Lack of regulation the root cause of labour issues
There is a lot of debate right now about how to get Bermudians back to work. Part of the answer lies in clamping down on companies who abuse immigration regulations. But another important factor is addressing a skills and training gap in the industry.

It's true - we're all in this together
There’s something to be said for being here, in the middle of the Atlantic at this time of year, surrounded by tropical cyclones. It reminds us that we are never completely in charge — that we are sometimes at the mercy of things we cannot possibly control.

Too few Bermudians recognize what unions have done for us
Most of us in the labour movement saw the article as an insult to all hard working Bermudians, especially those “sheroes” and heroes who gave their blood, sweat and tears so their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether black or white, would benefit from organized labour in Bermuda.

We must look inwards to stop gang war
In recent weeks there has been a lot of discussion in the media and the talk shows about gangs and the direction which the country should or should not take in regards to or under the banner of finding a solution.

Labour Day: Time to stop worshipping false gods
Labour Day is September 6, and tradition means big crowds in Barnard Park to hear self-serving speeches from leaders of the labour movement, all praising the wonderful work they undertake on behalf of the workers.

Tourism figures mask a worrying trend
We really need to climb out of Wonderland and get into the Land of Reality. The tourist figures for the second quarter 2010 were delivered with an emphasis on arrival numbers.

Letter: Government should pay for gang mediation
I read James Whittaker’s piece from August 18, with Col. Burch opining that Government should not be responsible for financing gang intervention.

Most of all, we need a change in tone
It could be that Paula Cox is a shoo-in to the premiership this October. But the sight of three good and honest people campaigning openly for the premiership — it is far too laid-back to be called a spectacle — is a remarkable and encouraging thing.

Race row in the U.S. has some parallels here in Bermuda
I’ve been watching the story of Dr. Laura Schlessinger unfold in the U.S. media. She’s the talk show host who took a call from an African American woman who sought advice on how to cope with her white husband’s friends when they made racist comments.

Thanks for showing your support for Ivan
Ivan Greene spent much of the last week eating at McDonald’s, sleeping on a friend’s couch and researching places to buy used text books in time for his fall semester at college.  Such is the way of life when an education wasn’t part of your long-term plan, but is suddenly at the top of your short-term to-do list.

Bermuda's had gangs fighting for their 'turf' for 100 years
Bermudians today may wring their hands, wail and gnash their teeth about ‘gang’ problems but the island has always had gangs. It’s just the nature of gang activity has changed — and radically.

I should give credit where it's due on PATI
One of the most frequent criticisms in the world of politics is a focus on what someone failed to do. It’s also one of the worst.

A promising student in need of our help
It’s been four years now since I returned to Bermuda after ten years elsewhere.  Since coming home I’ve tried to do my part – I’ve helped out at the Adult Education School, co-founded the BLING Book Club and participated in the Mirrors Program. The last one is my favourite because I mentor a young man who has taught me as much as I’ve tried to show him.

The saviour for young black men is education
Conscription has been my battle but not my only focus. The young black man is dear to my heart and as one I will always do what I can to make sure we do ourselves better. In the last three years I’ve met many people who have all been a part of my development including people that disagreed with me.

We can learn lessons about democracy from the TCI shake-up
News reports about the new Constitution being drafted for the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) are instructive for Bermuda about the content of and the process toward democracy. One can see areas in which TCI’s autonomy will be less than ours, for example in the proposed relationship between the local government and the governor.

Who will be the PLP's dep. leader?
Apparently it’s a new day for the PLP and in the full glare of public scrutiny, it won’t be politics as usual. What you won’t hear is there’s a split within the ranks of Bermuda’s ruling party on this new ‘open book’ approach to the internal mechanics of party business.

Column on Government finances: an apology
An opinion column headlined ‘Gov’t money mess includes $1bn in wrongly handled funds’, which ran on page 8 of the August 4 edition of the Bermuda Sun, carried substantial inaccuracies.
