Labour Day: Time to stop worshipping false gods
Labour Day is September 6, and tradition means big crowds in Barnard Park to hear self-serving speeches from leaders of the labour movement, all praising the wonderful work they undertake on behalf of the workers. (2 comments) Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Tourism figures mask a worrying trend
We really need to climb out of Wonderland and get into the Land of Reality. The tourist figures for the second quarter 2010 were delivered with an emphasis on arrival numbers. Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Letter: Government should pay for gang mediation
I read James Whittaker’s piece from August 18, with Col. Burch opining that Government should not be responsible for financing gang intervention. (1 comments) Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Most of all, we need a change in tone
It could be that Paula Cox is a shoo-in to the premiership this October. But the sight of three good and honest people campaigning openly for the premiership — it is far too laid-back to be called a spectacle — is a remarkable and encouraging thing. (1 comments) Friday, August 27, 2010

Race row in the U.S. has some parallels here in Bermuda
I’ve been watching the story of Dr. Laura Schlessinger unfold in the U.S. media. She’s the talk show host who took a call from an African American woman who sought advice on how to cope with her white husband’s friends when they made racist comments. (1 comments) Friday, August 27, 2010

Thanks for showing your support for Ivan
Ivan Greene spent much of the last week eating at McDonald’s, sleeping on a friend’s couch and researching places to buy used text books in time for his fall semester at college. Such is the way of life when an education wasn’t part of your long-term plan, but is suddenly at the top of your short-term to-do list. (1 comments) Friday, August 27, 2010

Bermuda's had gangs fighting for their 'turf' for 100 years
Bermudians today may wring their hands, wail and gnash their teeth about ‘gang’ problems but the island has always had gangs. It’s just the nature of gang activity has changed — and radically. (2 comments) Wednesday, August 25, 2010

I should give credit where it's due on PATI
One of the most frequent criticisms in the world of politics is a focus on what someone failed to do. It’s also one of the worst. Friday, August 20, 2010

A promising student in need of our help
It’s been four years now since I returned to Bermuda after ten years elsewhere. Since coming home I’ve tried to do my part – I’ve helped out at the Adult Education School, co-founded the BLING Book Club and participated in the Mirrors Program. The last one is my favourite because I mentor a young man who has taught me as much as I’ve tried to show him. (2 comments) Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The saviour for young black men is education
Conscription has been my battle but not my only focus. The young black man is dear to my heart and as one I will always do what I can to make sure we do ourselves better. In the last three years I’ve met many people who have all been a part of my development including people that disagreed with me. (11 comments) Friday, August 13, 2010

We can learn lessons about democracy from the TCI shake-up
News reports about the new Constitution being drafted for the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) are instructive for Bermuda about the content of and the process toward democracy. One can see areas in which TCI’s autonomy will be less than ours, for example in the proposed relationship between the local government and the governor. (1 comments) Friday, August 13, 2010

Who will be the PLP's dep. leader?
Apparently it’s a new day for the PLP and in the full glare of public scrutiny, it won’t be politics as usual. What you won’t hear is there’s a split within the ranks of Bermuda’s ruling party on this new ‘open book’ approach to the internal mechanics of party business. (1 comments) Friday, August 13, 2010

Jobs held by Bermudians are drip, drip, dripping away
During the recent drought, Bermudians were very careful about not wasting water. Pity that us lot do not have the same concern about Bermudian people dripping out of Bermuda’s national economy and national workforce and local community. (9 comments) Wednesday, August 11, 2010

This is a response to LaVerne Furbert’s statement, “people who live in glass houses really should be careful when throwing stones,” in reference to Ceola Wilson’s article entitled: ‘Will the PLP elect another woman leader? Part 1 of 2’. (6 comments) Wednesday, August 11, 2010

A victory for all of us wronged by this government
This week saw the successful end of a campaign by the Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) to protect Warwick Long Bay from the encroachment of commercial activity. A scheme for building a beach bar on that public parkland was quashed in the Supreme Court. (6 comments) Friday, August 06, 2010

Letter: Your columnist was imprecise about government finances
The column headlined ‘Gov’t money mess includes $1bn in wrongly handled funds’ was brought to my attention yesterday afternoon. To begin, I was stunned that a reputable newspaper would allow an op-ed column to be given a headline that was a falsification of facts. (1 comments) Friday, August 06, 2010
