A teenager was stabbed to death when he tried to stand up to a group of bullies, a court heard.

Kellon Hill was knifed through the heart after being set upon by Kellan Lewis and four other teenagers, it is alleged.

Mr. Lewis is accused of murdering the 18-year-old on Tribe Road No.4B, close to Elbow Beach, on the evening of August 9, 2008. He denies the charge.

Yesterday, a jury at Supreme Court was told Mr. Lewis and his friends Gary Hollis and Zharrin Simmons, along with two other teenagers, went to Elbow Beach to attend a leaving party.

Prosecutor Rory Field told jurors Mr. Lewis had gone to the party that night armed with a knife and with the attitude "someone was going to get hurt".

He said Mr. Lewis was acting in a "provocative and unruly fashion" during the evening.

He added: "Kellan Lewis was throwing his weight around and taking alcohol.

"He was the leader of this group and they were following him."

The court heard Mr. Lewis, 18, and Mr. Hollis went up to Mr. Hill as he was about to leave the party and grabbed a gold chain from around his neck.

Describing the attack as "aggressive and arrogant" Mr. Field added: "Kellon Hill got off his bike to get his chain back.

"Mr. Hollis then attacked Kellon Hill.

"Mr. Hill was then attacked by the other four members of the group.

"He was hit with a motorbike helmet.

"He fought back but was outnumbered.

"He was hit over the head with a cane which broke.

"And we suggest that during the attack he was stabbed at by Kellan Lewis with the knife."

The jury was told the Mr. Hill fell to the ground bleeding while his attackers fled the scene.

The teenager was taken to hospital but pronounced dead at 12.39am on August 10.

A post mortem revealed he sustained several stab wounds and a fatal stab wound to his heart.

Mr. Field said: "We suggest the defendant used the knife to stab the victim for no good reason.

"This was an aggressive response because the victim was standing up for himself against a group of bullies."

Yesterday afternoon a teenage girl told the court she spoke to Mr. Lewis at the party just before the fight broke out.

She said he told her: "All these guys around here, somebody is going to get beat up".

The witness went on to tell the jury that she saw the fight break out.

She said: "At first I did not think they were really fighting. I looked up the hill and people were jumping over each other.

"People were throwing helmets, too."

The teenager told the jury that Mr. Lewis and his friends ran on to the beach after the fight broke up.

She added: "Someone said "he's bleeding" and everyone started leaving the area and moving up the hill."

Mr. Lewis of Peacock Crescent, Pembroke denies murdering Mr. Hill and having an article with a blade in a public place.

The case continues.
